Do you remember your first day at work?
What was it like? Did you feel welcomed and were they ready for you?
Or did they look at you in horror and say “I forgot it was today you were starting” and send you off to make the coffee?
How would you like to be treated when you start a new job?
What sort of induction programme would work best for you?
Whether you are a boss or a colleague, how can you help someone get off to a great start?
Something else to consider. A new starter brings a fresh perspective so ask them to make a note in an Astonishment Log every time they see or hear something that astonishes them, for whatever reason. After a while, what you do and how you do it will become normal to them and lose its astonishment factor, so ask them to write the log in their first couple of weeks.
My best wishes, Paul
