team-work-ants-constructing-bridgeLast week, several people mentioned silos to me. The kind that exist in organisations. The kind they blamed for many problems.

And they said, “We must tear down the silos”.

But the silos are, to some extent, inevitable. A different culture is required in accounts, sales, research, and the factory. The problem is not the silos, but the gaps between them created by people’s perceptions of those cultural differences, and people’s focus on what’s near to them.

It reminded me of this quote…

“Borders? I have never seen one, but I have heard they exist in the minds of some people.”
Thor Heyerdahl

In your organisation, what borders have been erected in people’s minds, blotting out the lines of communication?

What is one thing you can do this week to reach across to another silo and hold out the hand of communication?

My best wishes, Paul
