I had a lesson in gardening yesterday

Gardening lessonI was helping a friend with her garden and we were putting in some new plants. I suggested a plant could go by a wall and she said, “It will never flourish there. That’s a North facing wall. It needs to be out here so it gets some sun”.

To her it was obvious from her experience, and from talking with other gardeners. To me…?

It reminded me of a manager’s garden where people will flourish, or not, with different tasks, different handling, even a desk in a different part of the office. Some people need more ‘watering’ and ‘fertilizer’, some need more protection from ‘pests’, some need more ‘shade’ and some need more ‘sun’.

The people in your management garden are all different, as different as plants, and each person needs a different management service from you, so each can flourish in their own way.

Unlike a plant, we can ask a person what will help them flourish, so this week set yourself a task to ask each person on your team what they need from you.

People flourish when they are engaged, and here are some tips on working with values to enhance engagement.

My best wishes, Paul
