"Informal Learning ...
practical ways to leverage the power without killing it!"
Informal learning is the powerhouse of learning in the workplace, and yet in many ways it is fragile. How can you manage informal learning without destroying the informality – without destroying the very thing that makes it so powerful?
Studies have consistently shown that 70% or more of the knowledge any person uses to do their job is learned informally. If it is such a large part of how people get results at work, we need to be paying far more attention to it, and not throwing all our budget at the formal approaches like training and e-learning.
So we need answers to questions like...
- How does it work?
- How do you manage it?
- How do you encourage it?
- How do you direct it?
I’m Paul Matthews and for the last twelve years I have worked with organisations to make their learning more effective – and I’ve put together this Best Practice Guide to provide some practical things you can do, and help explain an area of learning and development which is often ignored, and yet has the biggest potential for getting better results.

I am sure you will find it as thought provoking as the L&D manager who read the Guide and then said “I spend my training and development budget on less than 30% of what people learn. The rest is left to chance. That has to change!”
If you have any questions about the simple but powerful ideas in the guide, please do give me a call on my direct line number 01908 200 707 or email me on paul.matthews@peoplealchemy.co.uk
My very best wishes,
Paul Matthews

Comments on the Alchemy Guides "They are well-produced, clearly written and thought-provoking - I'm extremely glad to have them." Lucy Squire (HR Consultant) "I have now had time to read the article and it is excellent - I have for years been wondering my frustration with elearning definitions and the KIFi Model does the trick for me!" John Hepworth (HR Consultant) "In this brilliant document Paul Matthews clearly and simply sets out the difference between e-learning and e-reference and helps you to make the choice between the various offerings out there. It's a quick read, but a valuable one. I'd recommend it to anyone making decisions about computer based products to help them or their staff do their jobs better or if you want to start a debate about learning products in an organisation."
